Lemons are known for their high vitamin C levels – making them great for heart health, keeping your skin looking and feeling hydrated, and boosting your immunity.

How to buy

 Lemons are available all year round. When selecting a lemon, try to find one that is heavy for its size and has a smooth, firm and thin skin. Avoid soft, spongy lemons with wrinkled or bumpy skin, as they won’t be as juicy. 

 
How to store

Whole lemons will typically last for about one week if they are stored at room temperature. If you want them to last longer, keep them in an airtight container in the vegetable crisper – this will keep them fresh for three to four weeks. Cut or sliced lemons will last for three to four days if stored in an airtight container in the fridge.  

 
Cooking tips

  • Lemons are a popular citrus fruit used in endless recipes – from marinades, sauces and preserves to drinks, desserts and sweet and savoury dishes. The zest and juice are both valuable ingredients that will add a bright and tangy flavour to any dish.  
  • Squeeze lemon over your steamed greens to keep them looking vibrant, and enhance their flavour as well.  
  • Lemon curd is easy to make. Simple whisk eggs and sugar in a saucepan over low heat, then add butter, lemon juice and lemon zest and continue whisking until thick. Ideal served with scones, in a lemon tart or even with yoghurt.  
  • Preserved lemons can be used in almost everything, from roast chicken to lemon pies. Simply place lemon segments in a clean jar with salt and boiling water (you can also add a bay leaf if you like), and let them sit for six weeks before using.
