The Gates Lodge burger
Nothing beats homemade burgers off the BBQ! This recipe makes tasty burgers and goes brilliantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and many red wine blends.

- 500gm Beef Mince
- 1/2 Cup chopped red onion
- 2 Cloves minced garlic
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- Chilli powder (optional)
- 1 Tbsp chopped capers
- 1 Egg
- 2 Tbsp Breadcrumbs
- Salt and Pepper
Method
- Mix 500gms beef mince with ½ cup of finely chopped red onion, 2 cloves of minced garlic, a teaspoon each of ground cumin, dried thyme, dried oregano and a good pinch of chilli powder (optional), 1 tablespoon of chopped capers, a raw egg, 2 tablespoons of breadcrumbs and salt and pepper to taste.
- Shape into thick patties and cook on a BBQ until desired doneness
- Serve on toasted hamburger buns with tomato slices, lettuce and mayonnaise
Serve with a glass of Cabernet Merlot from Hawke’s Bay.
