NEW WORLD LITTLE GARDEN PROMOTION 2022 

Promoter

1. Foodstuffs (N.Z.) Limited (Foodstuffs) is the promoter of the New World Little Garden Promotion (Promotion).

2. By accepting a New World Little Garden seedling kit collectable (Collectable) you agree to these terms and conditions. 

Participating Stores

3. The Promotion is being run at all New World stores nationwide plus online at www.newworld.co.nz/shop and through the New World mobile application (Participating Stores).

Promotional Period

4. The Promotion runs from Monday 29th August to Sunday 9th October 2022 or until stock of any or each Collectable runs out (Promotional Period).  Stock may run out at some Participating Stores earlier than others.

How to get a Collectable 

5. Each time you make an eligible purchase of $40 or more (excluding spend on Christmas Club deposits, gift cards, prepaid debit cards, travel card top ups, phone card top ups, tobacco products, New Zealand Lotteries tickets and purchases paid for through charge accounts or purchases intended for wholesale or resale) in a single transaction at a Participating Store during the Promotional Period (Eligible Purchase), you will be offered, free of charge, a Little Garden seedling kit containing: one biodegradable pot, one seed mat, one soil tablet and one sticker).

6. The Little Garden seedling kit packaging contains growing and safety information. 

7. A Collectable will be offered each time an Eligible Purchase is made, for example if you spend $85 on qualifying purchases in one transaction, you will be offered two Collectables.

8. There are 24 different herbs, vegetables and flower Collectables available for collection as part of the Promotion:  Coriander, Oregano, Thyme, Chives, Borage, Popcorn, Broccoli, Lettuce, Sweet Corn, Snow Pea, Pak Choi, Kale, Carrot, Cauliflower, Brown Onion, White Cabbage, Beetroot, Turnip, Silverbeet, Spinach, Reb Cabbage, Rocket, Daikon Radish, Red Cabbage, Swede.

9. You can get a Collectable:

a. at checkouts at the time of making an Eligible Purchase;

b. from the customer service station when using the self-checkout after making an Eligible Purchase; or

c. for online shopping customers who have made an Eligible Purchase, delivered with your groceries.

Collectables available on a random basis

10. Each Collectable is available on a random basis and there is no guarantee that you will be provided with a different Collectable each time an Eligible Purchase is made. It is not possible for New World checkout staff to identify any specific Collectable and these cannot be swapped at the checkout once issued.

Collectables not suitable for children under 3 years

11. The Collectables are not suitable for children aged under (3) three years, as they may contain small parts which could be a choking hazard. Adult supervision is always recommended.

North Island Participating Stores - We have a Little Garden Collectors Book which will be available for purchase at Participating Stores in the North Island & South Island from the start of the Promotional Period. Stock of each accessory at each Participating Store may vary and will only be available to purchase while stocks last.

Other things you should know

14. While customers may on-swap Collectables, Collectables (individual and sets) must not be on-sold.

15. The Promoter accepts no responsibility for lost Collectables.

16. Collectables are not transferable or redeemable for cash.

17. The Promoter reserves the right to modify, suspend or terminate this Promotion at any time.

18. Little Garden components (other than herbs, vegetables and edible flowers) should not be consumed. Seed performance is subject to growing conditions.  

Exclusion of liability 

19. Subject to any applicable laws which cannot be excluded, Foodstuffs and each Participating Store, their respective employees and agents will not be liable for any loss, damage or injury of any nature incurred or suffered by any person (including but not limited to direct or consequential loss or loss arising from negligence) arising directly or indirectly out of or in connection with this Promotion or with the use of any Collectable.

20. Foodstuffs and any Participating Store may, in their sole discretion, refuse to provide a Collectable if it believes that a customer has behaved in a fraudulent or dishonest manner, or otherwise than in accordance with these terms and conditions.

Disputes 

21. In the event of a dispute concerning any aspect of the promotion the decision of Foodstuffs will be final. No correspondence concerning any decision made by Foodstuffs will be entered into.

With 24 different vegetable, herb and flower seedlings to collect, Little Garden’s an exciting collectible promotion run at New World’s nationwide. Spend excludes tobacco, cigarettes, gift card, Lotto purchases and Christmas Club top ups.

Little Garden’s perfect for anyone interested in growing their own vegetables, flowers and herbs, with one exception: Little Garden seedling kits are NOT suitable for children under 3 as they contain small parts and may pose a choking hazard.

Why is New World running this Little Garden promotion?

Little Garden was a huge success when we ran it in 2016, 2017 and 2020, and customers often ask us when we’re bringing it back. What better time than in spring, it’s the best time to be planting your garden!  

What is New World trying to achieve?

Little Garden’s great opportunity for all of us to have some fun with learning more about what goes into making a garden grow, the benefits of eating veg, and sharing inspiration and tasty recipes to make more of them.

Is Little Garden sustainable?

Sustainability has been considered in every element of New World’s Little Garden. The seedling kits are plastic free, the fibre pottles are home compostable, the collector tray is made of sugarcane pulp, and all paper packaging is recyclable and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. Plus, no dyes were used in the cotton gloves and aprons, and even the tag on the tin watering has a hemp string

Will Little Garden show up in our schools?

A big part of Little Garden is extended into schools across New Zealand. Every New World store in the country is donating at least one Little Garden to a local school and over 3,000 classes of 5-8 year olds have signed up to our specially created curriculum based education pack, designed to help kids have fun with Little Garden while learning about growing Little Garden focuses on healthy and affordable food, which is one of New World’s sustainability goals. We want to give Kiwi kids the best start to life by educating them on healthy food choices and nutrition.

What will children learn?

Little Garden seedling kits will enable adults and kids to share the experience of growing their own plants. This should help children and adults alike learn about the power of nature, how plants grow, eating seasonal produce and how they can add fresh herbs and vegetables to their meals as part of a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Parents want to set a good example for their children, and showing them how they can produce their own food is a fun way to do this.

What does it cost to get a Little Garden seedling kit?

For every $40 spent in-store at New World during the period Monday 29 August to Sunday 9 October 2022, shoppers will be offered one seedling kit. For example, a shopper who buys $80 of groceries will receive two seedling kits, while someone who spends $400 will receive 10 seedling kits.

No, Little Garden seedling kits will be given away with your $40 purchase at New World.  

What’s in each Little Garden seedling kit?

Each Little Garden seedling kit collectable includes:
1. A Seed Mat 
Seed Mat: a small number of seeds of the same plant type e.g. herb or vegetable, are embedded in biodegradable paper
2. A Soil Tablet – a brown dehydrated growing medium pressed into a compact round shape
3. A Pot – a small, fully biodegradable seedling pot for putting the soil and seeds into
4. A Fresh Friend sticker – Paper backed

How many Little Garden seedling kits has New World got to give away?

In total, we have nearly 10 million seedling kits to give to shoppers, when they spend $40 during the promotion. 

Are these Little Garden seedling kits suitable for children?

The Little Garden seedling kits are not suitable for children under 3 years old because there are small parts that could be a choking hazard. Adult supervision is required for all children, to reduce the mess, share the learning and to give the seeds a better chance of sprouting into plants through proper planting and care.

What are the Little Garden seedling kits made of?

• The pot is made of wood pulp and peat. It has no artificial additives and is bio-degradable.
• The seeds are supplied by a local company that sourced quality seeds where it was possible from local growers and other seeds from around the world.
• The soil tablet is made of coconut husk. 
• Each seedling kit comes in a cardboard wrapper with useful information and instructions.

Where do the Little Garden seedling kits come from?

• The pots were made in Denmark.
• The seeds are supplied by a local company that sourced quality seeds from around the world and meet all regulations of Biosecurity New Zealand. Fun Fact: Many of our seeds have been sourced from New Zealand!
• Soil tablets are produced in Sri Lanka and imported to the NL

Are the seedlings GMO free?

The seedlings are GMO free as its illegal to import GMO seeds into the country. We ensure that the seeds are of a high quality.

Are the seeds imported?

Some of them are. Those seeds are supplied by a local company which sources quality seeds from around the world and others have been sourced right here in New Zealand.

Are the seeds and/or soil dangerous to our environment? Likely to pose a risk to our biosecurity?

No, the seeds, soil and pots have all been cleared by Biosecurity New Zealand. All the seeds are for plants which already grow in New Zealand, and the soil tablet is made of coconut husk.

What if I keep getting the same Little Garden seedling kits from New World?

Unfortunately, New World staff cannot tell what seed type is contained in each Little Garden seedling kit so distribution is entirely random. So if you get too many of the same seeds, perhaps you could try swapping them with a family member or a friend who is also collecting them.

Why aren’t my seeds sprouting?

Most seeds should sprout within 1-2 weeks of being planted, though some may take longer. However, some seeds may not germinate and if you’re still not seeing a seedling, it could be because:
• The soil hasn’t been wet enough OR has been too wet
• The seeds weren’t covered in enough soil
• The soil was packed down too tightly
• The pots were put somewhere too windy, too cold, or too hot. 

Why is there mould on the pot/soil? And what to do about it?

The mould is caused by the moisture in the air. You can wipe it away with a tissue. It is not harmful.

The leaves of my plant are turning yellow, what should I do?

This could be caused by various things. You might be over or under-watering, and your plant might be getting too much or not enough light. 

Why are the roots of some plants outgrowing the pot?

If the roots are outgrowing the pot, it’s time to re-pot them. 

I think insects are eating my plants, what should I do?

You could use a small amount of pesticide or speak to your local garden centre about other ways to protect your plants.

My child has just eaten some seeds – what should I do?

According to the National Poison Centre the risk of any issue is low. Their advice is to keep your child hydrated to ensure the seeds pass through easily.

My child has just eaten part of a soil tablet – what should I do?

According to the National Poisons Centre the risk of any issue is low. Their advice is to maintain fluids for 24 hours, monitor normal bowel motions and check that your child doesn’t develop a temperature.

My child has just eaten part of a little pot – what should I do?

According to the National Poisons Centre the risk of any issue is low. Their advice is to keep your child hydrated to ensure the part of the little pot that’s been eaten passes through easily.

My child has just eaten one of the plants – what should I do?

According to the National Poisons Centre there is no need to do anything – almost all the plants are either fully edible or have non-edible components with low toxicity.
